was a woman; Augusta Ada Lovelace born in London 1815. She was an English mathematician and writer chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. Her notes on the engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine. Because of this, she is often described as the world's first computer programmer.
Dorothy Hodgkin (née Crowfoot) Chemist and Nobel Prize winner for solving the structure of penicillin and vitamin B12. The following year she was made a member of the Order of Merit, in recognition of her contribution to science. She devoted her later life to scientists in developing countries, especially China and India, improving East-West relations and disarmament. Dorothy also became president of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs.
